The developer technology landscape changes all the time as new tools and technologies are introduced. After having lots of interviews and reading through countless job descriptions on job boards I think this is a great modern tech stack for JavaScript developers in 2021. My framework of choice is React however you can swap it out for Vue, Angular or Svelte.

There are countless tools out there so I will only be covering a selection which when combined can be used in either personal projects or in a company. Of course many other project management tools exist out there for example…

I have known about HarperDB for quite some time in fact I have already written two articles on it. Creating React/Flask apps that connect to PostgreSQL and HarperDB and Creating React/Node apps that connect to PostgreSQL and HarperDB which were highly popular on the DEV platform before I started cross-posting.

Anyway, when I heard about this Hashnode and HarperDB Hackathon I just had to find a way to get involved.

This application is called Dogidex and the idea behind it is that it could potentially be used as a learning tool for children which would make learning new things fun…

Creating CSS Art is one of the best ways to improve your front-end programming skills as a developer. It is good for those who are just starting out and it is also a good way for more experienced developers to test their skills. The great thing about CSS Art is that it is an area that is not widely adopted outside of social media and personal projects. It is seen as more of a niche area and just a great way to have some fun. However it is so much more than that and while it might not have a…

Journaling is a great way to get thoughts out of your head. I have been doing it for quite a while using various apps. At the moment I am using an app called Daylio which is available on both iOS and Android. The great thing about this app is that it is more than just your average journal app. The key selling point here is that it can also be used as a mood diary and happiness tracker. …

For a few years Firefox was my web browser of choice. It was very popular and had very few competitors back then other than Internet Explorer. These days the competition has really heated up and there are now many web browsers to choose from. When Google Chrome was released that became my first choice browser and Safari was my second choice up until now. However I was curious how it would compare up against the likes Microsoft Edge which recently became available on macOS in April. And the Brave Browser which has been around since 2016. …

Obsidian is a Markdown Editor and Reader that can turn a folder of Markdown files into a very powerful knowledge base. The concept is that Obsidian is designed to work with a local folder on your computer which is also capable of syncing with cloud based providers like Dropbox. Essentially this leads to a scenario where you are in control of all of your data as opposed to having it on a 3rd party server. The Markdown files are stored on your local computer and you don’t have to share them unless you want to.

Obsidian is available for Windows…

I purchased my new M1 MacBook Pro at the end of last year which was December 2020, and it arrived in January 2021. My previous laptop was a 2014 MacBook Pro Retina which was starting to show it’s age because it was lacking in power and the battery was overdue for servicing. It was also out of warranty so I figured that the time was right to upgrade.

The M1 MacBook Pro

This is the best computer that I have ever owned. I have to hand it to Apple they really know how to build great computers. This laptop is super quiet it does…

One of the most important talking points for programmers is which path they want to go down. Do you want to be a freelancer or an employee that works for a company. Let’s compare the two and see what the difference is between both of them. They both have their pros and cons however there is nothing stopping you from alternating between the two throughout your developer career.

Freelancers

Freelancers are the type of people who are self employed. They often work with multiple clients as they are not tied down to a company structure where they would be expected to…

The Twitter community is amazing there are so many different people on the platform. That’s one of its greatest selling points you can connect with like-minded people fairly easily just by following them. However it is not all sunshine and rainbows because you are highly likely to encounter not only positive people but negative ones too. People who use Twitter can be divided into different groups and sorted by type.

This is my own opinion I know that everyone will have a personal thought on this so feel free to share it in the comments if you want to. It…

Whether you choose to accept it or not the fact remains that as we go through life we are all displaying our personal brand. Be it the clothes you wear, the way you talk, your interests or any infinite amount of choices. You are who you are and that is what makes everyone so unique and special. So then why is it that when it comes to programming a lot of people tend to go against their own trends and act differently? If you are a programmer then it is highly likely that you are either going to be doing…
